A Brief History of the Marathon on Tybee Island
In 1994 Dr. Cedric Stratton, a founding member of the Savannah Striders Track Club, brought the Savannah Marathon to Tybee Island. Ambitious from the outset the first year hosted the now familiar three events, a marathon, half marathon and 5K (All USATF certified). The events were called the Tybee Maritime Marathon. The 5K was dropped in 1996 but returned in 1997.
All courses have been through several redesigns as noted by the asterick next to the year.
In 1999, we began doing posters, check the Shirts & Posters page to see them all.
In 2002, we began awarding finisher medals to HalfMarathon participants as well as Marathoners. The medals are pictured below. The Marathon medal has a Sand Dollar on it and the Half Marathon medal has a Cockle shell. Both of these shells are found on the beach at Tybee and the other barrier islands of the South Atlantic Bight. Click the image to see the medals larger.
We hope you come and enjoy our run on Tybee Island. It is now always held on the first Saturday in February. 15th annual races will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2008.
